Phase I Odor Assessment:
Odor problem solving must begin with a clear understanding of the specific chemical
odorants which are most responsible for negative impact on the quality-of-life
of downwind citizens. Armed with this understanding, the challenge of developing
targeted and cost-effective monitoring / remediation strategies can be greatly simplified.
It is this concept of odorant prioritization that Don Wright of Don Wright
& Associates, LLC has developed, applied and refined during his past 15 years of
focus in this uniquely challenging field. Validation of this approach has emerged
by way of the hundreds of ‘real world’ odor investigations which have been successfully
performed under Don’s direction utilizing the concept of odorant prioritization
through MDGC-MS-Olfactometry. In his capacities as founder/CEO of Microanalytics
Instrumentation Corp. and subsequently as President, after the company’s acquisition
by MOCON in 1998, Don has applied and championed this approach for the resolution
of crisis-driven odor problems impacting consumer products and environments. Now,
under the DW&A, LLC banner, Don is applying this proven odor assessment and monitoring
strategy to the even more challenging field of
community downwind environmental odor problems originating from
agricultural, industrial and municipal sources.
Phase II Odor Monitoring and Remediation:
Success in first phase odorant prioritization reduces the challenge of developing
objective, instrument based odor monitoring protocols. Simply stated, it is much
less difficult to monitor three to five odorants of highest downwind odor impact
than scores or perhaps hundreds of known volatile emissions from an upwind odor
point-source. Likewise, the best odor remediation approach will be very different
if the highest impact odorants are semi-volatiles such as p-cresol, skatole and
dimethyl trisulfide as opposed to the highly volatile hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan
and ammonia. The Associates of DW&A, LLC is comprised of a consortium of highly
experienced, independent consultants and commercial service providers. The expertise
and technologies represented among these associates reflects the broad base required
for the development of targeted and cost-effective integrated solutions to high
impact community downwind odor problems. Represented among
the consulting professionals are engineers, chemists, meteorologists, microbiologists
and bioremediation specialists who are broadly and highly experienced in environmental
odor monitoring and remediation. These professionals operate as independent subcontractors
and are recruited from academia, industry and private practice. They are sub-contracted
or referred on a project-by-project basis based upon the
project scope and the odorant prioritization results emerging from Don’s Phase I
odor assessment effort. A partial listing of independent consulting professionals
